IC 342

IC 342 is a spiral galaxy in the constellation Camelopardalis. We see this galaxy face-on. It is one of the closest spiral galaxies (11 million LY) to our Milky Way Galaxy and is similar in overall luminosity. With its large size (21 arc-min in diameter), this galaxy would be a fine object for observation were it not for its location. We see IC 342 through part of the Milky Way stream, and its brightness is significantly dimmed (and reddened) by the intervening gas and dust in our galaxy. It has a prominent star-like core, but the spiral arms are obscurred among the stars of the Milky Way.
IC 342 was discovered by William Frederick Denning in 1895. Edwin Hubble first thought that IC 342 was in our Local Group of galaxies, but later measurements showed that it belonged to the smaller Maffei 1 Group of galaxies, a neighbor of our Local Group.
