NGC 1817

NGC 1817 is an open cluster in the constellation Taurus. In this image, it is the collection of stars in the lower center portion of the image. NGC 1817 contains around 280 member stars within an area around 20 arc-min across. The cluster has a visual magnitude of 7.7, making it easily observed in binoculars. Physically, it lies at a distance of around 5910 LY.
The bright (magnitude 5.18) star near the right edge of the image, HD 33554, is a foreground object, lying at a distance of around 343 LY. Another small grouping of stars lying above NGC 1817 (part of which makes sort of a sideways "V" shape) has the designation NGC 1807. It is likely not a true open cluster but rather an asterism of physically unrelated stars.
