NGC 2194

NGC 2194 is a small open cluster in the constellation Orion, approximately 1.75 degrees southwest of NGC 2169, the "37 Cluster." This cluster has 194 member stars concentrated into an area around 9 arc-min across, making the small cluster relatively rich against the background Milky Way. It has a visual magnitude of 8.5 and lies at a distance of 8655 LY. Were it at the distance of NGC 2169 (2990 LY), it would be a more spectacular object.
The small grouping of stars (some making sort of a circlet) directly above NGC 2194 near the top edge of the image has the designation Skiff J0614.8+1252. It is a possible cluster discovered in the mid-1970's by the American astronomer Brian Skiff. Visually, it contains around 20 stars contained within an area of sky around 5 arc-min across.
