NGC 2343     The Little Hyades

NGC 2343 is a small open cluster located in the constellation Monoceros. The stars of this cluster form a small "V" that is reminiscent of the Hyades cluster in Taurus. It even contains a bright reddish star (HD 54387) in the position where Aldebaran is in the Hyades. However, NGC 2343 is tiny (apparent diameter 6 arc-min) compared to the real Hyades. It contains around 55 member stars and lies at a distance of around 2850 LY.
NGC 2343 lies along the edge of a large region of nebulosity commonly called the Seagull Nebula (IC 2177). Longer exposures show glowing red Hα emissions scattered in the area immediately to the west of the cluster.
