NGC 2353

NGC 2353 is a sparse open cluster within the Winter Milky Way stream in the constellation Monoceros. It contains around 100 stars and lies at a distance of around 3400 LY. The brightest member is HD 55879, a magnitude 6.02 class B blue-white supergiant. The bright yellow-orange star to the left of the cluster is HD 55832, a magnitude 5.9 class K giant located at a distance of 1918 LY (obviously not a physical member of the cluster). NGC 2353 has a visual diameter of 18 arc-min, but its sparseness makes it difficult to pick out from the richness of the background Milky Way.
