NGC 2420

NGC 2420 is a small (5 arc-min), rich open cluster in the constellation Gemini. It contains around 300 stars and lies at a distance of around 6300 LY. Were it closer, it would be a more spectacular object. It was discovered in 1783 by William Herschel using his 18.7-inch reflecting telescope. In my image, NGC 2420 lies along the right side. In the upper left corner of the image is the small asterism called O'Neale 9. The five stars of this object form sort of a "T". It was first described by California amateur astronomer Mike O'Neale in 2005.
