NGC 6124

NGC 6124 is a beautiful open cluster lying along the edge of the Milky Way below the body of Scorpius. With a visual magnitude of 5.8, it is easily visible through binoculars as a softly glowing patch of light just to the east of the visual double stars μ1 and μ2 Scorpii. Unfortunately, NGC 6124 never gets very far above the southern horizon for viewers in North America, which contributes to the difficulty in observing it. The cluster contains around 125 visible stars and lies at a distance of around 18,600 LY. It was discovered in 1751 by Lacaille while on a trip to South Africa.
