NGC 6357

NGC 6357 is an emission nebula (or possibly a supernova remnant) located in the constellation Scorpius not far from the Cat's Paw Nebula (NGC 6334). This nebula goes by several names, including the "War and Peace Nebula" and the "Lobster Nebula". This extensive nebula is located around 8000 LY from us. The bright patch of pinkish nebulosity near the center of the nebula surrounds the open cluster Pismis 24. It contains around 15 stars, some of which are exceptionally large (> 50 solar masses). This small region is an area of active star formation, like the Trapezium region in the Orion Nebula (M 42). The nebulosity surrounding Pismis 24 has been given the informal name of the "Madokami Nebula" because, to some, it resembles a character (Madoka Kaname) in a popular Japanese anime series.
