NGC 6940      

NGC 6940 is a large open cluster in the constellation Vulpecula. It contains around 170 member stars and lies at a distance of around 2650 LY. It has a visual diameter of 25 arc-min and a visual magnitude of 6.3, making it a good target for binocular observations. It was discovered by William Herschel in 1784.
At its center, the cluster contains the bright red star HD 334750. This is a spectral class M giant lying at a distance of 8154 LY. At this distance, it is probably a background star.
