NGC 7538

NGC 7538 is a small (9 × 6 arc-min) but bright (magnitude 8.0) emission nebula located in the Milky Way stream in the constellation Cepheus. The nebula is illuminated by several stars located near its center. It is also a site of new star formation, and contains the largest as-yet discovered protostar (about 300 times the size of our solar system). The nebula is located at a distance of around 9100 LY in the Perseus Arm of the Milky Way galaxy.
NGC 7538 was recently observed by the Herschel Space Observatory and found to contain at least a dozen massive, dense clumps that could evolve into "colossal stars" in the future. It also observed a large (35 LY across) ring of dusty material within the nebula that could be a bubble-like feature pushed out by newly formed stars.
