Picot 1     Napoleaon's Hat

Picot 1 is an asterism of seven fairly bright stars (ranging in magnitude from 9.4 to 10.7) located about three-quarters of a degree below the bright star Arcturus in the constellation Bootes. To the French astronmer Fulbert Picot, the shape of the asterism reminded him of Napoleon's hat. To others, it seems to represent the bell-shaped curve of a Normal or Guassian Distribution. The asterism spans approximately 20 arc-min from side to side. The stars in this asterism have no physical relationship and the shape arises from the chance alignment of individual stars at various distances from us. Picot 1 is easily visible in a small telescope.
