M 38 (NGC 1912) and NGC 1907

M 38 is an open cluster in the constellation Auriga. It lies in the winter Milky Way close to two other notable open clusters, M 36 and M 37. All three of these clusters were discovered in 1654 by Giovanni Batista Hodierna, a Catholic prient living in Sicily. M 38 is around 3500 LY away, about 1000 LY closer than M 36 and M 37. It contains more than 500 stars, and has an estimated age of around 150-200 million years. The smaller open cluster next to M 38 is NGC 1907. It lies farther away than M 38, at about the same distance as M 36 and M 37 (around 4500 LY). NGC 1907 is around twice as old as M 38.
