NGC 2169   The "37" Cluster

NGC 2169 is an open cluster in the constellation Orion. It is one of my favorite open clusters because of its unique shape, and also because it contains stars with a variety of colors. Even though it lies in the winter Milky Way, it stands out nicely against its background. It was discovered in 1654 by Giovanni Batista Hodierna, who is also known for discovering a number of open clusters (M 36, M 37 and M38) in the constellation Auriga, which lies just to the north of this location. NGC 2169 is around 3600 LY away. I've imaged this cluster several times (seems like I have to image it each winter). This is the most recent acquisition.
