NGC 2266

NGC 2266 is an open cluster located in the constellation Gemini. It's small size (around 5 arc-min) and compactness make it somewhat difficult to pick out out the relatively rich field of surrounding stars. This cluster is notable for the colorful stars located within and around it. It contains a total of around 190 member stars, although the brightest apparent member (the yellow-white HD32194 near the lower left edge of the cluster in the image) is not physically part of it. The age of NGC 2266 is about the same as the Hyades cluster in the constellation Taurus (around 625 MY). It contains numerous mid-age main sequence and red giant stars, but not the bright blue-white giants found in young open clusters.
