- Sharpless 132
Sharpless 132 is an emission nebula located within the stream of the Milky Way in the constellation Cepheus. It lies in the Perseus arm of our galaxy at a distance of around 10,000 to 12,000 LY. Sharpless 132 is part of a large emission nebula structure spanning around 250 LY. Visually, it covers an area of around 20 × 35 arc-min but has a low surface brightness, making it difficult to observe against the backdrop of Milky Way stars.
The small knot of stars along the upper right edge of the image (immediately above the bright orange star HD 212466) is Berkeley 94. This small open cluster contains around a dozen member stars and lies at a distance of around 5220 LY. It has a visual magnitude of 8.7 and is around 3 arc-min in diameter. HD 212466 is a variable star (= RW Cephei) with an average magnitude of 6.44. It is a Class K supergiant lying at a distance of 4077 LY, thus making it a foreground object to the nebula.
